Luz: Museums, Gardens and a Great Hall

Two stops north, a different mood

Take Line 4 (Yellow) two stops from República to Luz and you step out into an older, quieter, greener piece of the city. This is where the coffee railways arrived, and where the money they made was later spent on art and music. For a morning or an afternoon, it's the most rewarding short trip you can make from the Suite.

The Pinacoteca

The Pinacoteca de São Paulo is, for my money, the best art museum in the city — and one of the most beautiful buildings to sit inside. It occupies a grand late-19th-century structure by the office of Ramos de Azevedo, later reworked so that light pours down through the old brick courtyards. The collection is strong on Brazilian art from the 1800s onward, and the building alone is worth the trip. There's a second wing, Pina Estação, a short walk away.

Sala São Paulo

Next door, inside the former Júlio Prestes railway station, is Sala São Paulo — the concert hall that's home to the state symphony orchestra. The main hall was carved out of the station's old grand concourse, and it's considered one of the finest rooms for classical music in South America. If your dates line up with a concert, book it; even the lobby is a spectacle.

The garden and the old station

• Jardim da Luz — the oldest public garden in São Paulo, full of old trees, sculpture and slow mornings. It sits right between the Pinacoteca and the station.
• Estação da Luz — the British-built station with the clock tower, now also home to the Museu da Língua Portuguesa, a museum about the Portuguese language that reopened after a fire. The station's story is worth reading first — see Estação da Luz and the Age of Coffee.

Art, music and a hundred-year-old garden, all inside a few blocks and two metrô stops from your bed.

Doing it well

Go in the morning when the light in the Pinacoteca is best and the garden is calm. Keep your wits about you around the station as you would anywhere busy, stick to the museum blocks, and come back to the Suite by mid-afternoon. It pairs naturally with the Coffee and Culture walk.
