A Perfect Day in Centro, Door to Door

One good day, door to door

If you have a single day to give central São Paulo, here's how I'd spend it — written as a walk, starting and ending at the Suite. It's not a race. It's coffee, a market, a little history, some art, a rooftop, and home.

Morning

Start with a cafezinho at a counter near the plaza — standing up, the local way. Then head to the Mercadão for the famous sandwich; yes, it's a lot of mortadella, and yes, you eat the whole thing. Wander Rua 25 de Março next door if you like a bit of chaos with your shopping.

Midday

Cross the Viaduto do Chá over the Anhangabaú valley — the three-minute walk from the new center to the old one. Look in at the Theatro Municipal, then carry on to Praça da Sé and the Pátio do Colégio, where the city began in 1554. The history of downtown makes more sense once you've stood there.

Afternoon

Take the metrô two stops to Luz for the Pinacoteca and a slow loop of the Jardim da Luz. Or, if your legs are done, ride up Farol Santander or the Terraço Itália and just look at the city for a while.

Evening

Time a drink on a rooftop for sunset. Then down to Bar Brahma on the Ipiranga and São João corner for a cold beer and, if you're lucky, live samba. Walk back through the lit-up plaza.

The best part of the day is that it ends a few steps from your bed, with the whole city glittering in the window.

Home

Back up to the Suite, pour a last one, take the emerald chair by the glass. That's a perfect day in Centro — and you never once needed a car.
