Nights Out and Live Music

Centro after dark is a boteco, a samba room and a slow walk home.

Centro after dark

Downtown São Paulo at night is not a strip of clubs. It's a boteco with cold beer and a paper tablecloth, a corner bar with live samba, a lit-up plaza, and a short walk home. It rewards people who like their nights a little unpolished and a lot of fun.

Start with a boteco

The boteco — the neighborhood bar — is the city's true nightlife. You order a cold chopp (draft beer), a plate of something fried to share, and you stay. There are good ones tucked all around República and Vila Buarque, a few minutes from the Suite. No reservation, no dress code, just a table on the sidewalk.

Live music, close by

  • Bar Brahma, on the famous corner of Ipiranga and São João, is a historic spot with regular live samba and choro — a proper old-São-Paulo night out, a couple of minutes from the door.
  • Praça Roosevelt, a short walk south, is ringed with bars, small theaters and a young, mixed crowd that spills onto the square until late.
  • Bixiga (Bela Vista), the old Italian quarter nearby, is good for cantinas and live music in equal measure.
The best night in Centro costs very little and involves at least one plate of something fried.

Sensible after dark

Centro is lively where the bars are and quiet on the empty blocks between them, so keep to the busy streets, travel by app-car late at night rather than walking long stretches, and you'll have a great time. The República by Night walk strings the best of it into one easy evening loop, and everything ends back at the Suite — which is its own advantage when you'd rather not go far.
